The Nova Scotia Real Estate Commission (NSREC) is the regulatory body for trading in real estate in the province of Nova Scotia. NSREC was established by the provincial government in 1997. The Commission is an independent, non-profit agency that supervises the professional activities of all real estate licensees in Nova Scotia.
The Commission’s mandate is to ensure consumer confidence through the administration of the Real Estate Trading Act and the Commission Bylaw. It works towards public protection through:
- administering and enforcing the Real Estate Trading Act, its Regulations and the Commission Bylaw;
- setting performance standards that govern trading in real estate;
- setting licensing requirements and entrance standards; and
- investigating complaints and imposing disciplinary sanctions under the Act.
To become a Real Estate professional in the province of Nova Scotia, the following is the Eligibility criteria:
- be a minimum of 19 years of age;
- be eligible to work in Canada;
- be a Canadian citizen or have a Permanent Resident Card; and
- the successful completion of high school education and proof of such (i.e. graduation certificate, transcript, post-secondary education certificate, diploma or degree) or an equivalency approved by the Registrar.

CANADIAN APPLICANTS
Licensees from other Canadian provinces applying for a licence to trade in real estate in Nova Scotia must provide to the Commission:
- an original licensing and discipline history acceptable to the Commission from the real estate regulatory body of the province they are currently licenced in
- a current (no older than six months) criminal record check from the RCMP, Commissionaires or another provider acceptable to the Commission. The Commission does not accept electronic criminal background check services such as Mybackcheck.com
- a clear copy of your birth certificate/ permanent resident card/ citizenship card or certificate
- a clear copy of one piece of government-issued photo identification (provincial driver’s licence/ provincial photo identification card/ passport)
- a completed licence application
- a signed Out of Province Certification form
- payment in cash, cheque, money order, debit, Visa, MasterCard or AMEX. Licensing fees are not prorated
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
Licensees from international jurisdictions with an occupational standard applying for a licence to trade in real estate in Nova Scotia must achieve a mark of 70 per cent or higher on the challenge exam and provide to the Commission:
- a licensing and discipline history acceptable to the Commission from the real estate regulatory body of the jurisdiction they are currently licenced in
- a current (no older than six months) criminal record check from a provider acceptable to the Commission
- proof that they are eligible to work in Canada
- a completed licence application
- all supporting documents must be in English (documents that are not in English must be translated by a certified translator)
- payment in cash, cheque, money order, debit, Visa, MasterCard or AMEX. Licensing fees are not prorated
